SACRAMENTO – Today, Mary Creasman Chief Executive Officer of the California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV) issued the following statement addressing California Governor Gavin Newsom’s proposed budget for the 2020-2021 fiscal year:

“The climate crisis is here and affecting us all daily. We have only 10 years to make significant changes to avoid an existential catastrophe. This is our reality and we need leadership and vision from our government in order to drive implementation. The Governor introduced a budget that highlights the fact that climate change is not just an environmental issue – it is an economic and justice issue as well. This year’s proposed budget is showing the financial cost of years of inaction at the scale that’s needed.

We thank the Governor for prioritizing investments in climate resiliency and emergency preparedness, and we must accelerate these investments to ensure vulnerable communities are protected from air and water pollution, from natural disasters and financial impacts. In this budget we are missing the solutions to tackle massive needed changes to our energy sources, agriculture practices, transportation systems, workforce, and concrete steps to reduce pollution and prevent catastrophic climate change. It’s 2020, not 2010, we must go beyond innovation incentives and resiliency. We are eager to work with the Administration and the Legislature on regulation and investments that protect our future and expand opportunity and health for all in this time of crisis.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
